American exceptionalism is the proposition that the United States is different from other countries in that it has a specific world mission to spread liberty and democracy. It is not a notion that the United States is quantitatively better than other countries or that it has a superior culture, but rather that it is “qualitatively different”…. Although the term does not necessarily imply superiority, many neoconservative and American conservative writers have promoted its use in that sense.1

There is nothing wrong with being exceptional and excelling at whatever you do. I feel sorry for the person who wants anything less for themselves and who accepts mediocrity or worse. Let’s not forget Christ’s reprimand to the church at Laodicea in Revelation 3:16, that it is better to be hot, even cold, than to be lukewarm. King Solomon concurred:

Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with thy might…. (Ecclesiastes 9:10)

In 1 Corinthians 9:24, the Apostle Paul charged the Corinthians to “run in such a way that you may win,” and then, in Verses 26-27, he declared, “I run in such a way, as not without aim; I box in such a way, as not beating the air; but I buffet my body and make it my slave, lest possibly, after I have preached to others, I myself should be disqualified.” Put briefly: Paul excelled at all he put his heart and hand to.

A better than thou attitude

Modern American exceptionalism is something else altogether and has led many Americans to a “better than thou” attitude. This has provoked the rest of the world to think Americans look down our noses at them. “Pride goeth before the fall” is a truism for both individuals and nations alike.

America has prospered like no other nation in modern times. However, she, like Israel of old, has forgotten where her success came from:

Beware that thou forget not Yahweh2 thy God, in not keeping his commandments, and his judgments, and his statutes, which I command thee this day: Lest when thou hast eaten and art full, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein; and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; then thine heart be lifted up, and thou forget Yahweh thy God…. And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. (Deuteronomy 8:11-17)

Thine, O Yahweh, is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Yahweh, and thou art exalted as head above all. Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all. (1 Chronicles 29:11-12)

Modern America’s concept of American exceptionalism was an inevitable consequence of the first three words of the U.S. Constitution’s Preamble—WE THE PEOPLE—and its audacious claim of establishing justice and securing liberty without Yahweh’s intervention.

Lets not take anything for granted:

Is America exceptional? Is America superior to the rest of the world? Is America even qualitatively different from other nations? The answers to those questions all depend upon what standard we use to answer them.

If we were to put the same questions to Yahweh, how might He answer them and by what standard would He assess America? I think we can all agree His standard would not be the same as used by most of today’s Americans. His standard would be His own immutable righteousness as found in His perfect law and altogether righteous judgments:

Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as Yahweh my God commanded me, that ye should do so in the land whither ye go to possess it. Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them, as Yahweh our God is in all things that we call upon him for? And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? (Deuteronomy 4:5-8)

By this standard

It was this standard that made both ancient Israel and 17th-century Colonial America an exceptional light to the rest of the world. In Democracy in America, French statesman and historian, Alexis de Tocqueville testified to this exceptionalism found in early America:

They exercised the rights of sovereignty; they named their magistrates, concluded peace or declared war, made police regulations, and enacted laws as if their allegiance was due only to God. Nothing can be more curious and, at the same time more instructive, than the legislation of that period; it is there that the solution of the great social problem which the United States now presents to the world is to be found.

Amongst these documents we shall notice, as especially characteristic, the code of laws promulgated by the little State of Connecticut in 1650. The legislators of Connecticut begin with the penal laws, and … they borrow their provisions from the text of Holy Writ. “Whosoever shall worship any other God than the Lord,” says the preamble of the Code, “shall surely be put to death.” This is followed by ten or twelve enactments of the same kind, copied verbatim from the books of Exodus, Leviticus, and Deuteronomy.3

Proverbs 14:34 declares that “righteousness exalteth a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.” 17th-century America was exalted in the eyes of the world because of her applied righteousness, embodied in Yahweh’s perfect law. Since 1789, when the United States of America began following the laws of WE THE PEOPLE, our legislation has ceased providing righteous instruction to others. As a consequence, the rest of the world now holds America in disdain. Indeed, her sins (violations of Yahweh’s law, 1 John 3:4) have become her reproach and have unmasked her alleged exceptionalism as nothing more than arrogance. If America hopes to ever regain her favored status in the eyes of the world, she must repent of her false pride, return to her God and her exalted mission of spreading Christianity and thereby true liberty to the world.

Thus saith Yahweh, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am Yahweh which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith Yahweh. (Jeremiah 9:23-24)

But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world. (Galatians 6:14)

2. YHWH, the English transliteration of the Tetragrammaton, is most often pronounced Yahweh. It is the principal Hebrew name of the God of the Bible and was inspired to appear nearly 7,000 times in the Old Testament. In obedience to the Third Commandment and in honor of His memorial name (Exodus 3:15), and the multitudes of Scriptures that charge us to proclaim, swear by, praise, extol, call upon, bless, glorify, and hold fast to His name, I have chosen to use His name throughout this blog. For a more thorough explanation concerning important reasons for using the sacred name of God, see “The Third Commandment.”

  1. Norm Farnum says:

Once again, an excellent commentary of our critical state of affairs. It’s II Chronicles 7:14 to the rescue! But that rescue can only be had by action on OUR part, individually and as a nation. God help us!

    • George Clark says:

Amen, Norm. I read 2 Chronicles 7:14 as a covenant offer. Yahweh will do His part when we do ours. Humble, pray, seek His face, turn from our wicked ways, etc. Having received Grace individually provides no promise of anything “corporately” or nationally. As you said before, “God help us.” Roger Mitchell has spoken well on that point in his blogs.

  2. Roger says:

One of the major sins in America is pride, both individual and corporate. You alluded to this above–“Pride goes before a fall…” It is my belief that for decades, America stood head and shoulders above the rest of the world (shades of King Saul) and now we are being brought down. Norm Farnum had it right, “God help us!”

The rest of Solomon’s proverb is that “a haughty spirit (is) before destruction.” Wow! Destruction is a word I know about due to 30 years in the construction industry. Destruction means a total wrecking and abandonment of what once stood. It is messy. It is dirty. It is ugly. It can be dangerous for anyone who is not paying attention.

We need to remember that Jesus Christ is the primary wrecking machine here, as He is everywhere. Ultimately, what is built once the rubble is cleared away will be far better than what we have now. We should not put our faith and hope in man and man’s constructions which will fail. We need to look to Jesus, Who is the author and finisher of our faith in the hope that He is building us a better place.

Now is not the time to look back nostalgically in hopes of resurrecting some former glory. It’s not going to happen. The sooner we realize that, the better off we’ll be. America as we once knew it is gone. The Constitution is ripped to shreds. It’s time to admit the mistakes we’ve made and move on.

I brought this paragraph, paraphrased slightly, out of my latest blog post. You can see it here. http://christianusa.us/gideonproject/self-defense-and-christianity-part-2 Gary North recently touched on it as well in this article. http://lewrockwell.com/north/north1258.html

Beautiful work, Ted! Keep pounding those nails.

    • I’m pleased you, others, and I are pounding together, building the kingdom on the foundation of Christ (1 Corinthians 3:11). Blessings! And, thank you for another good article as well.

  3. T. Edward Price says:

Spot on! This topic is very timely indeed. American exceptionalism has led to American imperialism. Many people look to John Winthrop’s sermon ,”A Model of Christian Charity”, as the genesis of the concept of American exceptionalism. They misinterpret his call to plant a “City upon a Hill”, and the meaning of Christ’s sermon, when He said in Matthew 5:14-16– “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.”
Instead of allowing the light of liberty to shine throughout the world for all to see, today’s cheerleaders for American exceptionalism, in particular the warmongering neoconservative camp, have endeavored to carry that beacon, forcefully, to the far reaches of their modern day empire. Spreading “liberty and democracy” is perfect Newspeak. Scores of nations have experienced, firsthand, American exceptionalism, through the end of a barrel or bomb, yet we DARE to wonder why we aren’t loved and embraced by our adversaries. We can’t inculcate a spirit of liberty without the Spirit.

2 Corinthians 3:17– ” Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”

very good writing, But that was then and this is now.
I was not alive until the late 20th century.
I leave the judges of the Nation to him who knows all things. As for me I know very little.
I live my life in service to others and for me this isenough .It is my lot. No it won’t change the world or defeat the new world odor. But Where I walk I leave a testimony to the truth that.
God is with me. In fact he has made me to be a god a preist and a servant.
This is what makes a nation small insignificant folks who know Him not about Him.
The churches of the world have lost it. While they all argue about doctrines geneologies and who is really the “chosen ones”. The enemy laffs with a sordid and evil delight as he runs his program on the earth. This is all in the plan.
We are in the age of MAN his increasing knowledge and high speed living.
Man is about to reach his peak pf imperfection and will establish the cities of Cain.
    These things must be so.
For until man has exerted himself above all else and then finds himeslf lacking HE will not be able to come to God until he first believes that HE IS.

    • Ditcher, thanks for joining the conversation. Could you please explain your statement that God (I take it you mean Yahweh, God of the Bible) made you to be a god.

      • ditcher3@gmail.com says:

Yes brother I do mean that. The God of Abraham, as He said it once Ye are gods.
which to me means not that I am God but god in terms of a leader of a household.

      • ditcher3@gmail.com says:

I do find what you say very interesting I may not agree with all you say but I am seeing through a glass darkly .I make no claim to know all things. I only know what I know/I know This God of Abraham I cried out to Him many years agos inmy 20’s. I went all in joined the church went through all the hoops of organized religion. All the while some thing seemd amiss.
In all my coming and going even in my rebellion He has never left me or forsaken me. Yes He does let me reap what I sow and I have harvested good and bad crops in my life.
But One thing I can say from experiance is that He IS Love, He is Life, He is breath. And I love Him.
so thank you for allowing me to post here. My aim is not to cause trouble nor be a rabble rowser. I do like the name He told Moses.
Tell them that I AM. He is that is the thing He is beyond a mere name ,there is no name that can describe him.
He told Adam to name everything but himself.
We are his offspring if He Is I AM also.

    • George Clark says:

“For until man has exerted himself above all else and then finds himself lacking HE will not be able to come to God until he first believes that HE IS.”

Hello, Ditcher. Thanks for joining in. I certainly am not wise enough to know if we are “in the age of man” or not. But as to the statement quoted above, I believe that has been true, on an individual basis, since the time of Adam and Eve. The “Fall” was the result of believing Satan’s lie, “ye shall be as gods.” Until man has received by faith the Grace that changes his life forever, the commandments of God often are seen as oppressive. At some point, by the work of the Holy Spirit, and perhaps encouraged by the testimony of loving friends and family, the man changes and then can see what seemed oppressive as being fully imbued with the infinite love of God.

In short, I hope you are wrong about an “age of man.” If the Holy Spirit has been fully withdrawn, it would be a time of totally hopeless calamity like we have never known, It is bad. But it is not that bad. As long as there is a remnant who look to the Lord for their salvation and their hope, then there is hope that the world will hear the Truth and see the Way. Only obedience in our part of the fulfillment of the covenants will save the nation, or the world, corporately. That is my opinion.

      • ditcher3@gmail.com says:

Brother No the Holy Spirit is not withdrawn He has been poured out on ALL flesh.
ALL means ALL. I don’t mean the age of Man as a bad thing.
God is willing that NONE perish but that ALL come home.
If it is His will which really can not be opposed, well no He can be opposed but He will never be overtaken.
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Not a sparrow falls from the sky without His Knowledge How much more are you than a sparrow.
We do not have to fight anything all we have to do is stand.
and when we have done all we can do to stand, stand some more.
We do not have to attack that is the enemiesmodus operandus.
        we overcome evil with good.
And there is no reason to fear.

  5. Mr. Pat Brady says:

I just read an article at another site discussing the Kingdom of God (Yah). The writer said a kingdom consists of three factors, the people, the king and a territory. Then he mentions a coming global kingdom with Messiah ruling physically and how the kingdom is in our hearts today before the physical comes. Aside from the point that I understand any physical existence created by a man comes from either a carnal mind or a spirit of life in Messiah mind, the effects in the physical realm is effected by what we believe and by the fruit we can judge the spirit (basically). I emailed the web page people and pointed out to them that they completely left out a vital factor of all kingdoms, and that is a kingdom has rules, it has laws or instruction in how we should live.

We may not be able to convince all the billions of people to change the law they yield to and employ but each of the sons and daughters of Yah, regardless if Messiah is here and now or hasn’t come yet, we are to live with the law in our hearts and have it manifest in the life we walk and talk with people. The more the better, if you ask me.
